ah, Coraline. the movie that traumatized me as a young child and later went on to inspire my love of all things creepy and spooky. this movie is gorgeous in every aspect possible. here are some crazy cool things about Coraline:
- the lyrics in the soundtrack were created to sound close to english, but just off enough to cause discomfort. this was meant to represent the other-worldliness of the other mother's pink palace.
- the pink palace was inspired by the first house neil gaiman (author of Coraline) owned in america.
- coraline as a character was inspired by gaiman's daughter.
- coraline almost wasn't published. neil gaiman took the book to an publisher who insisted it was too scary for children; gaiman argued otherwise, and told the publisher to ask his children their opinion of the book. the publisher's daughter read the book and declared it approriate for children. thank you, publisher's daughter!
